I met a guy named Richard Sheridan Willis when the theater troupe he is in came through and did Julius Caesar. I got to work backstage which was one of the best things I've ever done in my life, but anyway. He is the one who said that. He was referring to Shakespeare putting his words to a beat and with a rhythm. i thought i would make an interesting slug to try and get people to take a look at the page. sorry for those of you who thought you were actually going to get a rap. Oh! he played Brutus, it was really really good. If you google him he has a website.
Anyway i really wanted to set up a board where those people who read/see Shakespeare's plays can review them and get opinions. I know Jeanne has a Shakespeare, but no one but her is adding to it so i thought i would give it another go.
I got a copy of Hamlet recently. It came with a DVD (it's more fun to watch than to read). The DVD is a really good production by the BBC it has got to be 30 years old at least. It's got Derek Jacobi and Patrick Stewart as Hamlet and Claudius.
It wasn't at all as pompous and overdone like a lot of people who try to do Shakespeare have a tendency to do. But enough of the DVD how about the play. (if you look hard on youtube you can find a clip of the to be or not to be speech)
As to the actual play i thought it was very good. It;s a real thinker you know what i mean? I don't speculate about Shakespeare trying to give a gateway to the human soul or stuff like that because i know he was trying to do what most writers do, sell tickets. However, this play does have a lot of thought provoking stuff in it.
It also has some funny stuff. There is a scene between Hamlet and Polonius when Hamlet is pretending to be mad that is really funny. And in that same seen, but with another couple of guys there comes the first quote in my signature, "I am but mad north-northwest. When the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw." Which i really like obviously.
However it is a tragedy and the end is really sad. I don't want to spoil it, but i almost cried (and almost cried is big for me i don't cry for much.)
For those of you that are now interested, (coughcoughACE!!!coughcough) there is a website the link to which i shall provide at which you can read most of Shakespeare's bug plays (along with a bunch of other stuff) in their entirety for free. It's legal and everything it is all stuff that has fallen into the public domain. Unfortunatly Hamlet isn't amoung the list. Julius Caesar is though. publicliterature.org/search.php
Anyway happy reading!!!
